This checklist is different from the vocabulary and speech sound checklists as it is a guide to types of constructions, rather than specific words or sounds. Children are learning grammar all of the time that you are talking to them in natural sentences. You do not need to take a course in analysing English grammar to help your child to learn to use grammar and sentences, but it is helpful to be aware of the early stages of grammar development in order to be able to help your child with games and reading activities. The main aim of this checklist is to assist you to informally assess your child's current grammar comprehension and production and provide you with the opportunity of recording your child's progress, as he or she moves beyond the one word stage of communicating. It will take a child a number of years to master all the grammar discussed in this checklist and he or she will understand the grammar long before using it in spoken language.These checklists are intended to be helpful for families and professionals. They are designed to be usedin conjunction with books in the Down Syndrome Issues and Information series.
