These checklists provide lists of the first 120, second 340 and third 350 words that children learn to understand and to say.

Research studies show that a vocabulary of around 400 words is necessary before children, including children with Down syndrome, make progress with the grammar of their language. Their use of grammar and their control of speech production will benefit if they achieve this level of vocabulary knowledge by 5 to 6 years or earlier. These checklists provide lists of the first 120, second 340 and third 350 words that children learn to understand and to say. They should be used in cumulatively as children will understand words on the later checklists before they can say or sign all of the words on the earlier checklist.Words are grouped in topics and word types, and spaces are provided to record progress in understanding, use in sign, repetition, spontaneous use and intelligibility. Extra spaces are provided in each category to allow you to add words that your child understands or uses in that category, if they have some different words.These checklists are intended to be helpful for families and professionals. They are designed to be usedin conjunction with books in the Down Syndrome Issues and Information series.
